KINDA HASSAN
Visual and Sound Artist

Kinda Hassan is a multimedia artist who works with video and sound among other art forms. She uses forms that capture a reality in an act of denouncement, revealing that which is not usually seen.

As a sound artist, she mostly works around thematics related to the spaces she intervenes in, confronting different time-spaces in a given location. In her sound installations, she explores acoustics and phenomena of resonance and weaves them into the immaterial past and present realities of a given space. Her sound composition is generally diffused in unconventional multichannel setups.

She has exhibited her artwork in a number of local and international festivals and art galleries, including Oberhausen, Jihlava, Transmediale, Werkleitz and Fair Play Festivals, MUCEM Museum in Marseille and La Maréchalerie Art Center in Versailles, Mumok Museum in Vienna, Casa Arabe in Madrid and Cordoba, among other art spaces, festivals and platforms in New York, Prague, Cairo, Beirut, Ljubljana and Bahrain.

She has collaborated as a sound designer and composer on many projects, some of which are: “Shall I compare you to a Summer’s day” feature film by Mohammed Shawky Hassan, premiered at the 72nd Berlinale Festival 2022, “Before the dying of the Light” feature film by Ali Essafi, premiere at IDFA 2020 and purchased by Arte tv, “J’ai rêvé Carthage” short film by Cyril Nehme for which she won the Best Sound award at the Silk Road Film Awards Cannes 2021, “Sonic Totem” by Floy Krouchi (2021), a radiophonic hörspiel piece for France Culture, “Boujloud” a solo performance by Kenza Berrada (2021), “L’inconnu de Colegno”, medium length film by Maïder Fortouné, received the Bright Futures Palmares at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and “A Prayer before a Dawn” feature film by Jean Stephane Sauvaire, premiered at Cannes in 2018.

Hassan completed her Master's degree in Fine Arts at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts ALBA in 2007 (first of promotion) and her Master’s degree in Sound Design in the Ecole Supérieure d’Art et de Design in Le Mans in 2018 (with honors). She has interned with the internationally renowned sound designer Nicolas Becker in Paris among other internships and training sessions.

Today, besides her collaborative projects, she’s growing interest in programming, electronics and robotics, and is working on an automated autonomous ecosystem of instruments that react to their environment through sound, translating the complexity of data variation coming out of environmental sensors into mechanical or electrical actions that produce acoustic sound. The project reflects on sonic perception in relation to what our other senses can capture and what it can’t, exploring tightly also the interconnections between the visible and hearable.
